In line with Axcentua’s current therapeutic focus in oncology the company is developing its pipeline of clinical development compounds for out-licensing to pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
The company’s lead product AXP107-11 is targeted to enter phase I clinical development studies in the beginning of 2010. This compound is a multi-targeted compound with pro-apoptotic and anti-proliferative effects on a wide range of human cancer cells. In addition, the compound has chemosensitizing and chemopreventive properties. These properties make AXP107-11 an attractive candidate for treatment of complex heterogeneous diseases such as pancreatic cancer, where single-targeted agents have failed. In addition, the compound is safe and well tolerated without side-effects in animals and in humans. Although , the risk for failure of such a compound is not completely eliminated, it is dramatically reduced when compared to synthetic compounds with unknown and unpredictable side-effects.
Key clinical opinion leaders in the field of pancreatic cancer endorse the concept of using AXP107-11 for treatment of pancreatic cancer. Axcentua has submited two US provisional patent applications covering AXP107-11, consulted with the Swedish Medical Products Agency regarding regulatory requirements and is planning for phase I clinical trials in the beginning of 2010. The company is also in the process of applying for an orphan drug status for treatment of pancreatic cancer patients with AXP107-11.
